Ronnie E. Bayless
President & Consulting Scientist
Ronnie Bayless is a polymer chemist and scientific consultant with more than 40 years of experience in biomedical polymers, medical devices, softgel capsules, and nutritional gummy manufacturing. Throughout his career, he has combined fundamental chemistry and engineering principles with practical manufacturing experience to solve complex technical problems, develop new technologies, and improve product quality and process efficiency.
Early Research Career
Ronnie began his research chemistry career at Southern Research Institute (SRI) in Birmingham, Alabama, after completing two years of junior college with a focus in Biology. SRI is a well-known contract research organization conducting advanced chemistry, engineering, and medical research for government and corporate sponsors.
As a Research Technician, he worked on projects developing biomedical polymers and drug delivery systems. His responsibilities included:
While working full-time at SRI, Ronnie attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham part-time, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Biology. His eight years at SRI provided a strong scientific foundation and proved to be an ideal start to a career in research chemistry.
Johnson & Johnson – Medical Device Development
Shortly after graduating, Ronnie joined Critikon, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company in Tampa, Florida, as an R&D Scientist. During his ten years with Johnson & Johnson, he contributed to the development and manufacturing of advanced medical device materials and processes.
His work included:
Ronnie was promoted to Senior Scientist and led an R&D group of chemists, engineers, and technicians responsible for materials characterization and analytical support for catheter tubing extrusion and injection molding operations.
He also managed analytical testing and method development using technologies such as HPLC, UV/Vis Spectroscopy, gas chromatography, atomic absorption, thermal analysis, capillary rheometry, and mechanical testing systems.
During his time at Johnson & Johnson, he received advanced training in:
He managed an annual departmental budget of approximately $1 million.
During this period, Ronnie and his wife relocated to a rural area of Florida where they became aware of the large number of abandoned dogs in the region. They became deeply involved in dog rescue, fostering and adopting dozens of abandoned dogs—a passion that continues to this day.
Technical Director – Product Formulation & Patents
Following the closure of the Critikon facility, Ronnie joined a small manufacturing company in Largo, Florida as Technical Director. The company produced citrus-based hand cleaners, industrial cleaning products, and cosmetic formulations.
In this role, he gained extensive experience in formulation chemistry and manufacturing scale-up, particularly involving limonene-based and surfactant-based systems. He led projects that transitioned products from laboratory development into stable commercial manufacturing.
This work resulted in his first five U.S. patents.
RP Scherer – Softgel Capsule Technology
In 1993 Ronnie joined RP Scherer, a pioneer in softgel capsule manufacturing, beginning what would become a long and influential career in the softgel industry.
He initially worked at a newly established facility producing paintballs using softgel encapsulation technology. When he joined, the plant operated four encapsulation lines but produced only modest monthly revenue.
Applying a science-based approach to a historically empirical industry, Ronnie introduced investigative methods and process improvements including:
These improvements led to the development of multiple new paintball products, including Marballizer and Polar Ice, as well as the first paintball manufactured using 100% reclaimed gelatin shell material.
He was awarded a U.S. patent for a cold-fill formula and manufacturing process that:
Through improved process control and defect analysis, the team eliminated capsule leakers and product failures, and RP Scherer paintballs were recognized as the highest-quality paintballs in the world for several consecutive years.
By the time Ronnie transitioned to the company’s Technical Services Department in 1999, the paintball operation had grown into a $40 million annual business.
In Technical Services, he applied the same scientific methodology to resolve longstanding defects in OTC and nutritional softgel products. His final major project involved transferring a new gelatin manufacturing process—originally developed for paintball production—to the pharmaceutical softgel facility. The process eliminated the traditional practice of aging gelatin prior to encapsulation, significantly improving consistency while reducing manufacturing time and cost.
Ronnie considers his most important contribution to the softgel industry to be the introduction of fundamental chemistry and engineering practices that were previously underutilized in the field, helping advance the technology beyond traditional empirical methods.
Independent Consulting & Technology Development
In 2000 Ronnie established his first independent consulting practice, beginning with a three-year contract to help a Colombian softgel manufacturer improve their paintball product line.
Using the same science-driven process improvements developed at RP Scherer, the company significantly improved product quality and became a major competitor in the paintball industry for several years.
As an independent consultant, Ronnie worked with clients around the world on projects including:
He has worked with companies producing nutritional, OTC, and pharmaceutical softgel products globally.
During this period, he also co-developed a novel technology for water-based paintballs utilizing a compostable plant-based shell, thermoplastic processing, and water-based fill formulations. The technology resulted in multiple U.S. and international patents, and Ronnie now owns the full intellectual property rights and continues advancing the technology toward commercial scale.
Additional ventures included:
Captek Softgel International – Process Innovation
In 2015 Ronnie joined Captek Softgel International in California as part of the company’s R&D leadership team.
At Captek he:
When Captek launched its nutritional gummy manufacturing program, Ronnie was responsible for managing the R&D scale-up and process optimization activities, including equipment evaluation and process development.
He later oversaw the R&D Process Engineering function across all three manufacturing facilities.
Consulting Practice Today
In 2026 Ronnie returned to independent consulting through Bayless Technologies, Inc., applying decades of scientific and manufacturing experience to help clients solve complex technical problems and accelerate development in softgel, pharmaceutical, and nutritional gummy manufacturing.
His consulting approach focuses on applying fundamental chemistry and engineering principles to practical manufacturing challenges, allowing clients to shorten development timelines, resolve persistent defects, and build robust, efficient production systems.
Personal Interests
Outside of his professional work, Ronnie remains deeply committed to dog rescue and animal welfare. Over the years he and his wife have rescued, fostered, and adopted dozens of abandoned dogs. This work continues to be an important part of his life and reflects a long-standing commitment to helping animals in need.
